South Sea
pearls are the largest and rarest type of pearl and range from 8mm to
18mm in diameter. This type of pearl is found in the warm waters of North
Australia, Indonesia and the islands of the South Pacific. They come in a wide
variety of colors ranging from white to silver to gold and black (Tahitian).
The rarity of South Sea pearls is due primarily to the fact that growing larger
pearls requires a great deal of time, during which many things can go wrong: the
pearl may become misshapen or the oyster could die. Because of these risk
factors, South Sea pearls tend to be among the most expensive, commanding very
high prices for quality specimens.
