Sapphire
is one of the two gem quality forms of Corundum, the other is Ruby.
Sapphires are usually thought of as being blue, but gem quality Corundum also
come in a wide range of colors, including not only blue, but red, pink, green,
yellow, white, orange, purple, brown and black. When the color of
the gem is red, it is called Ruby. The pinkish orange variety are sometimes
called Padparadscha. Sapphires are found in Australia, India,
Thailand, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Burma, China, Kenya, Tanzania, Madagascar and the
United States. Sapphires are usually heat treated to improve their color, but
non-heat treated stones are also available and are considered to be more valuable. Ultrasonic and steam cleaners are usually safe for cleaning Sapphire jewelry.
