Amethyst is the purple variety of the mineral Quartz. The natural color range of Amethyst is from lilac to deep purple. Most Amethyst’s are heat treated to enhance the purple color. Quartz comes in a variety of transparent to translucent colors, as well as opaque colors, each of which has a name. The transparent color varieties are commonly used in jewelry and include Rock Crystal (clear), Smokey (gray), Citrine (yellow) and Amethyst (purple, The transparency and clarity of Amethyst is considered to be exceptionally good and internal flaws are very rare. Amethyst is found in Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Bolivia, Australia, Zambia, Nigeria and Namibia. The Amethyst from South America is generally available in larger sizes than from Africa or Australia.
